Saint Petersburg Tourism wants Indian carriers to look at opportunities for direct flights, ET TravelWorld News, ET TravelWorld

“One of our missions during our visit is to meet representatives of main airline companies in India and convince them to integrate their services with Saint Petersburg,” said Kuzenskaya with the help of a translator. Currently, the only connection between India and Russia is between Delhi and Moscow operated by the Russian national carrier Aeroflot.

She said that there has been growing interest among Indians to visit Saint Petersburg in the last few years resulting in 10 to 15 per cent growth in Indian arrivals to the city year-on-year. The number of Indian tourist arrivals to Russia, in general, had doubled in the last 10 years.

While Moscow is the main port of call for Indians because of the direct connectivity, she said that Moscow – Saint Petersburg packages (Two cities – Million Impressions) are the most popular package with international tourists visiting Russia.

“Saint Petersburg is very well connected through international hubs of Dubai, Doha and Istanbul as well,” she said.

Now, a universal single-entry electronic visa will radically simplify the process of obtaining a permit, allowing a foreign citizen to stay in Russia for up to 16 days in a period of up to 60 calendar days. In order to apply for an electronic visa, a tourist will only need to fill out an online application, which will be reviewed by the Foreign Ministry within four days.

Talking about the attractions, Kuzenskaya said that Saint Petersburg is a multi-faceted city with varied attractions. Considered to be the cultural capital of Russia, she said that the city has over 200 museums, libraries and theatres. A transport and logistics hub of Russia, the city has an international airport, 5 railway stations, an international bus station, sea and river ports, she said.

She said that the key focus in the Indian market for the city tourism board is to promote the city for Indian weddings, medical and wellness tourism, etc. There are a number of royal palaces available in the city to host Indian weddings. The city has a matured eco-system of event organisers who can facilitate and deliver world-class events for international guests, she said.

In the medical and wellness tourism, Kuzenskaya said that the city has over 40 Sanatoriums that can offer all sorts of medical care. The city has a unique climate because of the largely coniferous forest cover, she said.

Kuzenskaya said that the city Tourism Board has plans to hold dedicated medical and wellness tourism roadshows in multiple cities of India in the coming months.

The city is also developing its niche in gastronomic tourism, sports tourism and leisure tourism in a big way. The city also hosts a number of festivals and events around the year which attracts a lot of international tourists, she said.
